THE ROE.
A restaurant located in Manhattan’s Chelsea Market. Designed for Sophia Roe, a mushroom enthusiast and vegan chef whose mission is to fight world hunger. As A TV show host, mushroom enthusiast, and advocate for sustainable food sourcing, there is so much more to her recipes than just a delicious meal. The design process focused on creating a space that reflects Roe’s ethos.
The design of the Roe takes inspiration from New York in the 80s and the social change that came about as a result of public involvement in community-wide issues. Artists like Jean Michel Basqiuat and Keith Haring spread messages of anti-drugs and anti-hate on the streets and subways in New York, making it accessible to everyone and anyone. Their graffiti brought community members together and acted as a catalyst for real change.
Similarly to Basquiat and Haring’s focus on advocacy through street art, Roe focuses her recipes on local, seasonal produce that nourishes the body and soul. Designed with mostly concrete, brick, and subway tiles, the design focuses on materials local to New York. Using a mix of saturated colors, patterns, and materials, The Roe stays true to the mission without screaming “vegan” or “social justice.” Different nooks and seating options allow for the restaurant experience to adjust to each guest’s personal needs. Warm lighting and attention to small details create a sense of home away from home.
